Chapter Ten
Ready or Not
Oz must have fetched me some shorts because suddenly Trace was helping me get them on, completing the task like he dressed semi-conscious girls every day. I was laid gently in the small backseat of Mom’s Beetle, and I heard both boys settle into the front seats. Trace was holding one of my hoodies to his nose and he sniffed occasionally from the passenger side. I grimaced when he pulled it away bloody, remembering the headbutt I’d given his face earlier. He glared at me and pushed the fabric back to his nostrils.
“Drive,” he told Oz, but Oz just sat there with his lip ring gleaming in the sparse light given off by the electronic dash. I tried to push myself up, failed, and fought to keep my eyes open.
“I said…drive.” Trace spoke through gritted teeth, his voice muffled by the hoodie pressed to his face.
“But…but that was Wren’s mom, man. We can’t…we can’t just leave her.” Oz’s voice trembled, but his hands never reached for the ignition.
Trace sighed, arm shooting out and turning the key for him. “That was Wren’s mother, once upon a time, but not anymore. Right now, she’s a newly awakened vampire and you guys are the all-you-can-eat buffet. It’s not her fault—she’s infected—but it doesn’t change the fact that she’s dangerous.”
“But…but my aunt. She’s still in there. She’s still in there!” Oh God, how could I have forgotten Aunt Mag? She was lying somewhere in there in some vampire hypnosis-induced sleep, helpless as a newborn kitten with its paws tied, and here we were, ready to flee as fast as the car would allow.
Trace twisted around in his seat, pulling the hoodie away from his nose. He pulled himself closer by the headrest, and pointed his finger. “You are not going back in there. If Laylian is wise, he’s moving your mother already. We can’t risk your life, you’re leaving, and I’m going with you to make sure you don’t do anything else foolish.”
I managed to sit up, and leaned forward until my face was inches from his. I spat each word, mimicking his pointing finger and squinted my eyes, “I’m not leaving her with two vampires! Why should I take orders from you? I barely know you! Ever since you’ve come into my life it’s been a crazy mess. I’m going back in, like it or not!”
His mouth twitched and his jaw bulged as he gritted his teeth. He opened the passenger-side door and tossed my hoodie into the back seat. It landed on my arm and I pushed it away when I realized it was soaked with his blood.
His voice sounded tired and exasperated. “Laylian won’t allow her to be harmed—you’re useful to him. He wants to please you. Your mother is now his responsibility. I don’t trust him very much, but he’s never gone back on his word as far as our business is concerned.” Trace slid out of the door, stretched his back with his hands on his
